I have worked as a hostess and letterer at 58Hundred, a family-run restaurant in St. Louis, Missouri, since I turned 16. Over the summer of 2020, they asked me to design and execute an abstract mural for the dining room of their restaurant. With the help of some friends, I designed the mural, color matched paint, purchased supplies, and painted the two-wall mural.
Before we started, the walls were completely blank. The client sent these pictures as inspiration pictures and as a reference point for what they were looking for.
Initial Sketches
Based off of the images that the client provided, I sketched out different layout options. I began with sketches in a sketchbook and then moved to my iPad, using a photo of the space and adding shapes and colors on top of it. To decide on the colors, we drew from the restaurant's established color scheme.
Progress Photos
After purchasing the paint and supplies, we began by taping out the design that I had sketched out. We then began filling in the sections and carefully planned so we could work efficiently and leave time for the paint to dry between coats.
Final Mural
We had to make a slight color adjustment to the paint as the orange originally came out a little more pink than we wanted. However, after the final adjustments we were very happy with the result and so was the client! It made the space feel more lively and welcoming than the blank white walls it had before.
